History of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce

The Aurora Chamber of Commerce was started in the early 1900s. It experienced a hiatus in the early 1960s and was rejuvenated by a group of interested business people in 1979. In 1984, the Chamber moved to its first office – an old sales trailer on the same site where the current office is located.

The new building – a meeting place for business – was opened in December 2002 under the leadership of Ian Johnson, President of the Board of Directors, and Rosalyn Gonsalves, General Manager.

The Chamber was known as the Aurora Board of Trade initially, with the name changing in 1967 to the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a politically independent, membership-based, volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization. It is not part of the Corporation of the Town of Aurora; however, we work closely on a number of issues to benefit the local business community.

Funding for the Chamber comes from revenue raised through membership fees and special events. The events bring together community members, businesses, and visitors from surrounding communities.

Since the early days, Chamber members have benefitted from connecting with each other. They have shared problems and dreams, business knowledge, the excitement of being a business in Aurora, and survival skills during some tough economic downturns.

Today, the Chamber has a membership of approximately 600 businesses and continues to grow, increase retention and respond to new challenges and opportunities to benefit its members.
