Concerns Surrounding the Exotic Petting Zoo at the 2016 Aurora Chamber Street Festival
Monday, June 6, 2016
The Aurora Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the citizens of Aurora for sharing their concerns with us by phone, email and social media regarding the Tiger Paw Exotics petting zoo and pony rides hosted in the Law Insurance Brokers Limited parking lot during the 21st Annual Aurora Chamber Street Festival on Sunday, June 5, 2016.
The Aurora Chamber of Commerce does not condone animal cruelty under any circumstances and did not hire Tiger Paw Exotics to be an official entertainer of the festival. The petting zoo and pony rides were organized by an independent local business and took place on private property.
The Aurora Chamber of Commerce took immediate action to address this issue. Law Insurance Brokers Limited will no longer utilize Tiger Paw Exotics, nor will they host a petting zoo or pony rides during future Aurora Chamber Street Festivals. Please read their official statement here.
The Aurora Chamber of Commerce has updated our Street Festival vendor policy to ensure a situation of this nature does not arise again. Our updated vendor policy, effective immediately, will not permit animals to be on display in any capacity at the annual Aurora Chamber Street Festival, or any event hosted by the Aurora Chamber of Commerce going forward.
In addition, the Aurora Chamber of Commerce contacted the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) to discuss the concerns expressed by attendees of the Street Festival. We noted that the Aurora Chamber is taking this issue very seriously and recommended a full inspection of Tiger Paw Exotics. OSPCA inspector Brad Dewar confirmed that the complaints will be addressed by zoo inspectors on staff this week. The Aurora Chamber has requested a follow up from the OSPCA regarding the outcome of the inspection.
If you attended the Aurora Chamber Street Festival and would like to voice your concerns regarding the animals under the care of Tiger Paw Exotics, please contact the OSPCA at 310-SPCA (7722), 1-888-668-7722 ext. 327, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Mr. Dewar noted that the OSPCA enforces, but does not create, legislation surrounding animal cruelty. He recommended that citizens contact their local government representatives to express concern surrounding the current legislation and to advocate for change.
